Distinguished Statuette

Pietro da Barga, Farnese Hercules
Modeled ca. 1576; cast 17th century

Bronze  | The MET 64.101.1462

This statuette is a gilded reduction of the renowned Farnese Hercules, a colossal marble sculpture discovered in Rome in 1540. That iconic work, now in Naples, is itself a Roman copy of a Greek original by Lysippos, often called the "Weary Hercules."

This statuette, distinguished by its front-only gilding, was crafted by Pietro da Barga. It's identical in style and technique to another ungilt version by Pietro, commissioned by Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici for a decorative cabinet. Pietro likely focused on the overall ensemble, perhaps as part of a grand piece of furniture, rather than the individual casting quality, which shows typical imperfections.

Classic Roast Beef

A roast beef sandwich can be a fantastic source of protein, essential for muscle repair, growth, and overall bodily functions. The star, of course, is the roast beef itself. Just one ounce can deliver over 7 grams of protein, meaning a typical sandwich with several slices provides a substantial amount.

Beyond the meat, other components contribute. The bread, especially whole-grain varieties like whole wheat or sourdough, can add 3-5 grams of protein per slice. If you include a slice of cheese, that's another 4-7 grams. Even certain condiments can contribute small amounts.

In total, a well-made roast beef sandwich can easily pack 20-30 grams or more of protein, making it a satisfying and nutrient-dense meal for energy and satiety.

Extreme Motion

Guercino, Samson Captured by the Philistines, 1619

Oil on canvas | The MET 1984.459.2

Guercino's dramatic masterpiece depicts the biblical hero Samson at his most vulnerable. Having had his strength-giving hair shorn by the deceitful Delilah, Samson is shown from behind, powerfully rendered, as he struggles against his Philistine captors who have bound and blinded him. This painting, a pivotal work in Guercino's career, perfectly encapsulates the Baroque style with its intense theatricality, focus on the human body in extreme motion, and intricate, tight composition. It was painted for Cardinal Giacomo Serra, a notable patron who also collected works by Rubens.

Powerhouse Meal

This double-stacked deli sandwich delivers bold flavor and serious protein power. Piled high with sliced turkey and pastrami on hearty rye bread, it’s both savory and satisfying. A thick wedge of juicy tomato and crisp lettuce add freshness and crunch, while the rye gives a tangy finish that ties it all together. With over 30 grams of protein, it’s a powerhouse meal that fuels your day—perfect for lunch or a post-workout bite. Hearty, flavorful, and built to satisfy, this sandwich is everything you want from a classic deli stack.

Made from ASTM A48 Class 20 grey iron with an extremely durable rubber coating, they're designed to withstand rigorous use. The handles feature medium depth knurling for a secure and comfortable grip, enhancing safety and control. This versatile set is perfect for targeting specific muscle groups, performing full-body routines, or incorporating into isolation, functional, HIIT, and strength training workouts.

Anthony van Dyck / Frans Snyders

Two Tritons at the Feast of Acheloüs
Oil on canvas | The MET 06.1039

Since its acquisition in 1906, this striking painting has sparked ongoing debate over its authorship. Like many works produced in seventeenth-century Antwerp, it appears to be a collaboration between two artists—one specializing in the human figure and the other in still life. Recent conservation efforts have strengthened the attribution of the two robust, bearded male figures to the young Anthony van Dyck, known for his expressive rendering of the human form. These figures represent tritons, or mermen, bearing a lavish assortment of seafood toward a banquet scene just visible in the background to the left.

Two Protein Titans

This deli-style delight combines the best of both worlds: the savory depth of thinly sliced roast beef meets the peppery, spiced kick of pastrami. Layered generously on fresh bread, these two protein titans create a robust foundation. Crisp lettuce adds a refreshing crunch, while ripe, juicy tomato slices contribute a touch of sweetness and acidity. Finally, thinly shaved red onion delivers a sharp, piquant bite that cuts through the richness of the meats. It's a symphony of textures and flavors, a truly satisfying and classic sandwich experience.

High-pitched Voices

 Andrea Sacchi,

Marcantonio Pasqualini,Crowned by Apollo, 1641

Oil on canvas | The MET 1981.317

Religious restrictions barred women from performing in Catholic churches, leading to the prominence of castrati—male singers castrated before puberty to preserve their high-pitched voices. Among the most renowned was Pasqualini, shown here crowned by Apollo, the god of music. In the background, Apollo’s victory over the satyr Marsyas is depicted—Marsyas hangs bound to a tree, his bagpipes cast aside in defeat. Pasqualini joined the Sistine Chapel choir in 1630 and became a leading performer in operas staged at the Palazzo Barberini from 1632 onward. These productions often featured elaborate sets designed by the artist Sacchi.

Savory, Smoky, and Refreshing

A turkey club sandwich is a timeless favorite, and when built on hearty rye bread and cut into neat triangle quarters, it becomes something truly special. Layers of tender sliced turkey, crisp bacon, juicy tomatoes, and fresh lettuce create the perfect balance of savory, smoky, and refreshing flavors. The rye bread adds a tangy depth and sturdy texture that holds up beautifully to the generous fillings. Cut into triangle quarters, it’s both visually appealing and easy to share—or savor slowly, one perfect bite at a time. It’s a classic done right: satisfying, flavorful, and always a crowd-pleaser.

Accidentally Pierced

Peter Paul Rubens, Venus and Adonis, c.1635

Oil on canvas | The MET  37.162

Rubens drew the subject of this painting from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. After being accidentally pierced by one of Cupid’s arrows, Venus falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful hunter Adonis. Ignoring both her devotion and her pleas for caution, Adonis goes out to hunt and is fatally gored by a wild boar. Rubens captures the poignant moment of their parting—a theme also famously portrayed by Titian in another work now housed at The Met. By revisiting subjects tackled by earlier masters, Rubens positioned himself as a legitimate heir to their artistic legacy, demonstrating both reverence and ambition.

Buttery Brioche Bun

The Cobra is a bold, flavor-loaded chicken sandwich that hits hard with every bite. At its center is a crispy, deep-fried chicken breast, stacked with smoky bacon, crisp lettuce, and juicy tomato. A slather of creamy, garlicky aïoli adds richness, while a sliced pickle brings a sharp, tangy kick that cuts through the savory layers. All of this is tucked inside a soft, buttery brioche bun that holds everything together beautifully. The Cobra is a satisfying clash of crunch, spice, and bold flavor—a sandwich that doesn’t play it safe. It’s messy, memorable, and made for serious sandwich lovers.

Salon of The Venuses

Alexandre Cabanel, The Birth of Venus, 1875

Oil on canvas | The MET 94.24.1

Alexandre Cabanel's "The Birth of Venus" (Musée d'Orsay, Paris) caused a sensation at the 1863 Salon, an event so notable for its abundance of alluring nudes it was dubbed the "Salon of the Venuses." Emperor Napoleon III himself acquired that initial, highly acclaimed version for his private collection.

Over a decade later, in 1875, prominent New Yorker John Wolfe commissioned this slightly smaller replica directly from Cabanel. The painting perfectly exemplifies the tenets of academic art: a classical mythological theme, exquisitely graceful modeling of the figure, sumptuously silky brushwork, and an idealized, perfected form. This polished style consistently appealed to collectors of the era. This enduring popularity persisted even as contemporary artists, like Courbet, began to challenge such academic conventions, instead pursuing a more personal and realistic interpretation of nature and truth in their work.

Satisfying Sandwich

This grilled chicken sandwich is a flavorful twist on a classic, stacked high with bold textures and taste. A juicy, perfectly grilled chicken breast rests on a bed of creamy, tangy coleslaw, adding crunch and zest in every bite. Sliced tomato brings a juicy freshness, while crispy deep-fried red onions crown the sandwich with a savory crunch and subtle sweetness. All of it is tucked inside a soft, golden bun that balances richness with a hint of sweetness. It's a vibrant, satisfying sandwich that brings together smoky, creamy, and crispy in one unforgettable bite—comfort food with a gourmet edge.

Defensive Stance

John Hoppner, Richard Humphreys, the Boxer, c.1787

Oil on canvas | The MET 53.113

Late 18th-century British artists and writers were captivated by boxing, drawn to its unique blend of brutal violence and the aesthetic of the human form. This particular portrait of Richard Humphreys, commissioned by his manager before a highly anticipated match, gained significant public exposure through numerous printed reproductions. Hoppner's painting captures the young boxer on the turf, poised in a defensive stance. He's depicted in typical attire for the time: breeches, silk stockings, and pumps. This era of boxing was particularly brutal, as bouts were fought with bare fists, intensifying the raw spectacle.

Deli Gem

The most incredible barbecued beef brisket sandwich from Sherman’s Deli in Palm Springs, and it was unforgettable. Piled high with an impressive amount of tender, smoky brisket, the sandwich was rich, juicy, and full of deep barbecue flavor. Each bite delivered melt-in-your-mouth meat with just the right balance of charred edges and succulent fat. The sandwich was generously portioned—overflowing, really—and nestled in a soft, fresh sourdough held up beautifully. No frills, just pure, delicious satisfaction. It’s the kind of sandwich you think about long after it’s gone—comforting, indulgent, and absolutely worth every bite. A true deli gem.
